Service Your Expats Through International EAP

International business is an important component of commerce. Firms are merging more often and at a more rapid pace than at any other time in economic history. Firms which may have begun as a Midwest based company can find themselves, sometimes overnight, to be an International employer. Employees are required to move to an area of the world that they never would have imagined as a place to live and raise their families. And, it happens every day. Families and employers are immediately challenged with meeting their healthcare needs. This has created a challenge and often costly situation for employers.

The typical foreign assignment costs an employer on average $1,000,000 (one million dollars). And, statistically, foreign assignments are only 40 - 45% successful. International employers are in a costly situation and looking for cost benefit programs. One solution, with a proven track record, is to have Worldwide EAP develop international EAP services managed by physicians which will directly impact difficult situations before they escalate to a crisis for the employer, the employee and their family.

Four years ago, a major mining company with a vision about support for expatriates from London to 14,000 feet in the Andes contacted Worldwide EAP to share the vision and develop an EAP program tailored to the challenge. To meet this challenge, partners John Stenzel and Sandy Weimer, M.D., began the process of searching the world, visiting sites on five continents, gathering information on the situations faced by the employees and human resources. In each location, they surveyed the local clinical community to find professionals who could help with any emergency with world standard care in English. Worldwide EAP was not satisfied to simply translate the model of EAP available in North America to other countries. Many of the expatriates served are in remote or extraordinary places in developing countries, where standards are difficult to measure. Using proprietary resources, the company has put together a network of senior clinicians, the majority being psychiatrists, e.g. M.D.'s, who can deliver a full spectrum of services as well as delegate care where appropriate. This is a network which is experienced, cosmopolitan, and creative under the leadership of American clinicians, which has been filling the individualized needs of visionary companies operating globally.

Worldwide EAP provides an effective and timely response to each call, through their Glendale, California based call center and corporate offices. The average response time is less than 12 minutes. This enables a trained clinician to work with the caller to resolve a critical situation in an expeditious manner. The result is a controlled situation, a resolved problem, a more contented employee and a cost-effective solution for the employer.

Dr. Weimer is key to the success of Worldwide EAP. His focus on the needs of the employee and their family is foremost in the development of services provided by this firm. Dr. Weimer speaks four languages in addition to English and has personally traveled to over twenty-five countries to develop the clinical network and to serve the needs of their International employers. Dr. Weimer understands first-hand the needs of his clients; as an international traveler, family member and employer. His approach to developing programs is from a multi- lingual AND cross-cultural perspective. "As a physician and International traveler, I realized that a need existed for this type of global service" explains Weimer, "a person seeking help must have the confidence before making the call that a qualified professional is the first point of contact". As a psychiatrist, Dr. Weimer understands the need to interact both clinically and professionally with primary care physicians. This interaction is an integral component of the services provided by Worldwide EAP. The emphasis with this organization is the critical role that the physician plays with each client.

In addition to custom designed programs and services, Worldwide EAP has developed programs to keep pace with changing technologies and to enhance current international EAP systems. The firm has developed telecommunications networks, which enable them to provide immediate assistance to expatriates, managers, and employers in over 150 countries. According to John C. Stenzel, founding partner, "Employers are realizing the need to provide mental health services to their employees and their families in extremely remote parts of the world". Mr. Stenzel is no stranger to healthcare. He has been employed directly at the Senior Management level and as a consultant for the world's largest healthcare firms. His expertise is in network development and in developing operational and administrative systems to increase the efficiency of physicians, medical groups, clinics and hospitals. He is recognized as an industry leader in his field. Stenzel continues, "The challenges that these employees and their families face can be overwhelming. We had to develop technology to address their needs while at the same time continuing with the same level of mental health service". It is this level of programming and customized service that has propelled Worldwide EAP to the forefront in the development of International Employee Assistance Programs. The unique operation and capabilities of this firm are not going unnoticed by International employers or those considering global operations. The management team at Worldwide EAP has set the foundation for one of the most innovative programs in the EAP industry which is having a global impact.
